CDNvideo — 3 years!

Dear Habradi!

3 years ago we left their places of work and launched his own company — content delivery network CDNvideo. Then we worked together, we had one room, several servers, and not very big, by the standards of current startups, the amount in the account received from friends, investors. Today, through our CDN to distribute video and statics 6000 sites, we have about 100 servers placed in different countries and continents, 30 people in the state, an office in Moscow and representative office in Kiev. Perhaps this is what is called a success, though I don't like that word. And, despite the modesty, we still want to share the experience of creating your own business, and along with a little boast of their achievements :)

I well remember our first day of work: I got the room key, 3 computers and furniture from the administration of Technopark "Strogino". Hooked up to the Internet and telephony from local provider. And only then had the distinct impression that above us there is no more bosses and organizations now we are our own masters, and have to rely only on own forces. And that we need to run a successful business before we will pass all the investor's money. Not to forget that all have to happen, I have printed from the Internet and hung on the wall this picture:

Although doubts about the success of the enterprise, certainly was — especially because prior to that your business never had. As a man most of his life worked in big companies, I had heard about administrative obstacles and other difficulties in doing business in Russia. In fact, however, was much better — at least until now, no particular administrative barriers, we have not noticed. On the contrary, once in Technopark "Strogino" under the Government of Moscow, to his surprise, felt a real support from the state structures — there we were immediately given all the necessary for work (premises, communications, computers, furniture), six months are given a subsidy for business development, and even taught for free on various useful lectures, even at Gleb Arkhangelsk have been able to see.

In our experience, in order to make your own business, in addition to the belief that everything will work out and no doubt, you need 3 things:

1. Assemble a team of the right people.
2. To make a good product.
3. To find clients.

All these things are extremely important, and on different stages of business development they alternately overtake each other in importance. Oddly enough, you have to start with the end of the list — that is, in the beginning business must first find the customer or those who can potentially become. They will tell you about their problems and needs, knowing that you will be able to start making your own product, discussing its features with potential customers.

Product needs to be quite innovative otherwise you will be lost among the sea of competitors, but already popular on the market, otherwise you run the risk ahead of time. Your product will judge you, those of your clients, whom you do not know personally. So having a good product is extremely important at the stage of reaching a wide market.

But to make the product is bad, it is much more important for any business, at least, IT is to maintain and develop their product. And here is the first part out of the command. If the technical team can quickly resolve issues in the product release updates — you will not save any excellent in its properties to the product, no market recognition or good relations with customers. In turn, if the commercial part of the team will not be able to promote and sell the product, the Herculean efforts of techies will be no compensation.

All of the above is the result of our actual experience. When we run, we first began to communicate with potential customers, and it helped us a lot — for example, not talking with customers during the preparation for the launch, we would not understand the importance of video broadcasting to mobile devices. We started around the same time with the advent of the first iPad, and it so happened that we were the first in Russia turned into product, mobile video streaming, and for a time was the only one in the market who provide this service. Subsequently, thanks to active listening of our clients, we launched a number of services for cloud video streaming. And, of course, without our wonderful team system administrators, programmers, sellers, marketers and accountants, without a clear, coordinated and, at times, selfless work we would not be able to become a really working, fast-growing business.
